Oyster Dome

We took a trip up to Blanchard Hill for the first time in about 20 years and got some great exercise and some beautiful photos while hiking up to the Oyster Dome. Our pedometers clocked in a little over 5 miles by the end of the trip from Samish Overlook to the Oyster Dome and back. There was a little bit of everything on this hike: trails, views, wildlife, plant life, and more!

The area now known as “Samish Overlook” that has the parking spots and outhouses used to be a completely clear and open cliff side that was popular for outdoor raves, backwoods camping, and was a commonly used as a hang gliding take off spot (still is). Back then, you had to know someone who knew someone who had the directions up the logging roads written on the back of a napkin.

Today, it is officially maintained by Washington State Parks and a popular destination for many people in the area. Find more about the location and directions to the trailheads on the Washington Trails Association page.

No shortage of furry friends and cool plant life on this hike.

Totally worth the trek when you find a great overlook view! I remember camping trips out here in the early 2000s and waking up after a long night to the rustling of hang gliders getting ready to take off from spots like this.
